ANDREAS GEFELLER
THE NEW YORKER   by: Vince Aletti   April 1, 2009

ANDREAS GEFELLER
Gefeller creates enormous, engrossing color photographs by digitally stitching together thousands of much smaller pictures—shot from just above ground level—like pieces in a quilt. The low perspective results in incredibly detailed views of a well-trod stretch of sand and of graffiti on a roof, but everything above knee level disappears: a ginkgo tree is nothing but its golden halo of fallen leaves. The mostly empty studios at Düsseldorf’s Academy of the Arts become Ryman-like abstractions with occasional dollops of trash—a picture of the entire structure is an insanely compact tour de force. Through May 16. (Hasted Hunt, 529 W. 20th St. 212-627-0006.)
